I discovered this jewel of a book in the African American genre here at Bookbub. It is a wondrous work of fiction replete with spiritual teachings and a slight hint of life on the other side. It is the story of a young black girl growing up in a small Southern town who struggles to find her own identity. Addie Mae is mentored by a beloved teacher who provides her with select books to expand her horizons and to further open her heart to previously unseen possibilities. It is so much more than a coming of age story but her evolution into young womanhood is central to the story. Addie Mae is surrounded by richly developed characters. The language is breathtakingly beautiful...poetic almost. I reread my underlined sentences for the sheer joy of hearing the music in the words.
